On the Edge of Perception
Kimbly isn't particularly surprised when hallucinations begin to plague him. Perhaps the desert is hunting him, trying to drive him mad and prevent him from uncovering all its secrets. The first mirage doesn't seem strange at all: one particularly hot day, Kimbly patrols the streets, killing rebels along the way, and doesn't even notice that he's already blown one of them up twice, until it rises and attacks him a third time, its clothes smeared with blood and covered in terrible burns.
