Several years ago, when he had been equally focused on more traditional therapy methods, he had begun treating a patient named Erik. They rarely discussed it in sessions, but Dr. Wells was aware that Erik was trans, and that at least part of his depression stemmed from his debilitating dysphoria. He always wore bulky layers regardless of the temperature, presumably to obscure how large his breasts were. Surely, Dr. Wells thought, it would improve Erik’s quality of life and overall mental health to make him more comfortable in his own body.

When Ben walked up to the table at the café where they normally met for lunch, Kai immediately knew that something was off. Ben had been Kai’s English teacher his senior year of high school, and he had quickly taken Kai under his wing once he learned that Kai was also trans.
