First Officer Spock of the USS Enterprise is part of the away team that discovers the survivors of Tarsus IV. Captain Pike assigns him to the curious case of James Tiberius Kirk, who steals one of Spock's sweaters. There were no sufficient Vulcan poetics to describe the emptiness of the colony as it was found on the morning of stardate 2249.43. The fully-completed residential sector was neither ugly nor beautiful but simply remote; a hollow landscape of metal alloys and sensible architecture, with determined vegetation growing alongside the support beams. They did not flower.

Six months into the Five Year Mission, the Enterprise has reached the outskirts of the known galaxy, and its Captain has fallen ill. With a growing sense of unease, and increasing desperation, Spock takes it upon himself to manage both the ship, and Jim’s failing health, determined to save them both. Because Khan’s blood was never going to be a permanent solution.

Jim and Spock have known each other since Jim was eight and Spock ten as Jim's mother was stationed on Vulcan for five years. When Winona Kirk's assignment is changed, they are separated, but they vow this will not be the end for them. After all they are bonded.

Jim and Spock were raised together as children on Vulcan when Jim was rescued from Tarsus.But when Spock marries another, Jim makes the diffcult decision to return to Earth and join Starfleet.

As children, Jim and Spock promised they would get married when they grew up. Jim thought it was just a silly joke between kids. When they meet again upon the Enterprise, Spock still expects Jim to fulfill that promise.

Embarking upon the Five-Year mission with the Starfleet flagship, and the best and the brightest aboard her, it seems that Jim Kirk has it all. With Spock and Bones beside him, his physical recovery complete, he feels ready to take on the universe. But when Command orders the Enterprise into a diplomatic mission involving an unstable, warring planet, somebody is bound to get hurt. Adept at hiding both his demons and his affections, Jim is ready to do whatever it takes to be the Captain Pike wanted him to be, whether that involves sacrificing his happiness, or even his life. Peace is not a universal objective.

After the end of the five-year mission, Kirk and Spock go their separate ways. Spock to New Vulcan and Kirk to Iowa. But eventually they are reunited in Riverside where Jim is also navigating his relationship with his mother.

Throughout his childhood, Spock suffers from 'emotional seizures'. It takes his healers and parents years to understand their cause - a special telsu bond: t'hy'la.

This story has Kirk and Spock meeting as children, learning they are T'hy'la, and continuing from there, eventually into adulthood and the Academy, at some point.
