A Modern day Merlin AU set at the University of St Andrews, featuring teetotal kickboxers, secret wizards, magnificent bodyguards of various genders, irate fairies, imprisoned dragons, crumbling gothic architecture, arrogant princes, adorable engineering students, stolen gold, magical doorways, attempted assassination, drunken students, shaving foam fights, embarrassing mornings after, The Hammer Dance, duty, responsibility, friendship and true love... This story was inspired by the thought of Prince William of Wales (and indeed the current Max von Hapsburg) studying at the University of St Andrews; it is also, as the title suggests, at least a little inspired by the operetta 'The Student Prince'. Modern AU. When Merlin Emrys gets a summer job at Buckingham Palace, he doesn't expect to even meet King Arthur, let alone become involved in protecting him from a plot to overthrow the monarchy.

Merlin sees him across a crowded living room and promptly spills his beer down the back of the couch and over some hapless stranger’s neck.

It wasn't all that unusual for people to hide their daemons; Merlin, however, seems to be taking it a little far.

Considering Arthur's future wife will be chosen less for compatibility than for her political value, Merlin may be the only marriage he'll have that won't end in bloodshed or a great deal of fortifying wine.

Packless and going into his first heat, Merlin is afraid. Unwilling to be taken by stray alphas, he plans to hole up in his small flat until it's over. He thinks he's being careful, but he is wrong. Arthur is the alpha of a centuries-old were pack living deep in the forest. Omegas are the only breeders and very rare, and this is making many were packs desperate. Uther dies instead of Ygraine when Arthur is born. Balinor helps Ygraine secure her position as regent, magic isn’t banned, and Merlin and Arthur grow up side by side. Camelot is different but not cloudless, destiny is still a troublesome thing, and Arthur is still charmingly oblivious when it comes to things that matter most in life.

After a sudden encounter with Morgana, Merlin is severely injured, only managing to survive by calling the Great Dragon. However, he must return to Camelot still affected and somehow hide this from Arthur. But what's another secret on top of so many others? I do not endorse Arthur's actions, but this is what I think he'd do in canon. This was my season 3 prediction!

Arthur has a list in his head of Reasons Why He Loves Merlin. There are currently 327 reasons on that list and they include things like, “He looks slightly deranged when he smiles” and “He buys me little plastic knights to go with my collection” and “He once brought home a stray cat and tried to hide it in his room without me finding out”.

It was a knife, silver blade polished to a mirror sheen. Its hilt and off-edge was a dark metal, and its guard was decorated with a carving of a skull. Ren swung it a few times. The weight felt good in his hand, even more fitting than the blade that had manifested into his grasp the moment he first called on Arsene's power. The wind in the dungeon caressed his back and he shuddered. For a moment, it sounded almost like a whisper: Sa....el. Ren Amamiya isn't quite equipped to handle the ramifications of time travel, or the impending apocalypse, or the sudden appearance of two dozen more Persona-users with firsthand experience fighting gods, demons and everything in-between. The year had a plan for him, and this wasn't it. But when a Witch grants you the opportunity to save everyone you've ever loved, readiness should likely be the farther thing from your mind. This isn't the first time he's had to play with the cards he's been dealt. And the game must begin again.

Arthur opened his eyes a minute later to the sight of seven magpies streaking across the top of the clearing, their shapes dark against the white clouds and the muted grey of the sky. He tried to remember what it was that seven magpies meant—he'd had a nurse who had sung the rhyme to him as a child—but couldn't. Arthur wakes up somewhere he doesn't recognise, but where he clearly belongs.
