After Sirius dies right in front of him, a desolate Harry would sooner die himself than be sent back to the Dursleys one more time. Voldemort gets creative, however, and instead of dying, Harry finds himself rocketed twenty years into the past and straight into the memories from Severus' pensieve. Tom probably was meant to be a Dark Lord. But this Hufflepuff won't leave him alone and somehow he gets these stupid protective feelings and he ends up saving the world. That's just great.
