Kakashi never believed in mates, how his father explained to him before he killed himself. He never believed a word that man had said. Until he saw her. Untill he met her. The cute little girl reading a book that was far beyond his understanding. He belonged to her. He'll protect her when she wasn't able to protect herself. She was his home. Not Konoha. This village could burn to the ground for all he cared. Because of the actions of the Third, he'd might start that fire, and laugh like a lunatic while doing so. But instead, he left.

This is an alternative take on 'Mine' that more or less answers the question: what if Kakashi was a little bit more unhinged, and accepted his mate from the get-go?
