Without even realizing it—with the world still a conglomeration of swirling color and too-distant sounds—Dazai stumbled his way into the middle of oncoming traffic, right at the heart of Yokohama. He didn't register the sound of someone screaming his name. Didn't hear the blaring horns, terrified screaming, or screeching tires of swerving cars. Couldn't see the flashing lights or the people across the street, some turning away to avoid the scene while others looked on with growing horror, unable to tear their eyes away from inevitable tragedy.
