"Yo, partner. Work treating you well? Me? I'm doing alright. Catch you later." The senior colleague I got paired up with recently is hard to read—motivated or just going with the flow, who knows? "Hey, partner. Fancy meeting you here. Just finished work? Perfect timing. If you're free, come with me for a bit. Not like you have plans anyway, right?" Being assumed to have nothing better to do wasn't the best feeling, but, well, he wasn't wrong. I had no particular plans—just heading home and killing time. No reason to say no, so I decided to tag along. She said he wanted to swing by his place first. When I asked if he forgot something, she just shrugged and said she wanted to change—something about not wanting to stain his white shirt. She hopped out of the car, ran inside, and in less than two minutes, she was back in a more casual outfit. "You hungry? There's a spot I go to a lot just around the corner. Let's go." And just like that, we were off to his usual place.
After about a five-minute drive, we pulled up to an American diner. "The burgers here are my go-to. The meat's obviously great, but the buttery buns? Insanely good. Everything about them is just perfect. Practically drinkable." Not sure what that last part meant, but they did look seriously good. * "It'h on ne! hick wwhateverr yau want!!" (* It's on me! Pick whatever you want!) She said something while stuffing her face with a burger, but with her mouth full, it was barely intelligible. Uh… did she just say it's on her? "Bingo! Get whatever you want!" She grinned, happily chomping down on his burger, sauce smeared around her mouth. I'd never seen him like this at work before. Maybe that's why—without even realizing it—some of the exhaustion from today's shift just melted away.
ある日の仕事終わり -One evening after work-
少し前からバディを組むことになった先輩はやる気があるんだか無いんだかよく分からない。
「ん？よう相棒、偶然だな、仕事終わりか？ちょうどよかった、このあと用事がないならちょっと付き合え。お前のことだ、どうせ暇だろう？」
暇と決めつけられるのは何とも言えない気持ちになるが、先輩の言う通り特に用事もなく、家に帰って適当に過ごそうと思っていた。
断る理由もないので先輩に付き合うことにした。
ちょっと家に寄らせてくれと言われ、何か忘れものでも？と尋ねると、着替えてきたいらしく。
白シャツだから汚したくないだかなんだか言いながら車を降り、家に入ったのもつかの間、２分も経たないうちにラフな格好で帰って来た。
腹減ってない？すぐそこによく行く店がある、そこ行くぞ～。と先輩が言い、言われるがままにその例の店へと車は進んでいく。
５分ほど車を走らせると店が見えてきた。よく行く店はどうやらアメリカンダイナーのようだ。
「ここのバーガーがお気に入り。肉は当然美味しいしバターの効いたバンズも美味しい、つまり全部美味しい。もはや飲める」
訳の分からないことを最後に言っていたが、本当に美味しそうだ。
「わらひのおぼりば、たえたひおえらんへ」
ハンバーガーを頬張りながら言われてもよく聞き取れないのですが...。
えっと、先輩のおごり…で合ってます？
そう！だから好きなの食べろ！、口の周りにバーガーソースを付けながら幸せそうにハンバーガーを頬張る先輩。
仕事の時には見たことのないそんな顔を見たからかは分からないが、今日の仕事の疲れもいつの間にか和らいだように感じた。
